Abstract:
A method was developed for the determination of fatty acids in dried breast milk spot
and plasma using gas chromatography with mass spectrometry and flame ionization
detection. The breast milk was sampled onto a collection paper treated with butylated
hydroxytoluene. Fatty acids were derivatized with acetyl chloride in methanol to form
fatty acids methyl esters. Our results indicate that the concentrations of fatty acids found
in human milk can be used for assessing the intake and needs of infants.
