Postmodification of Noun Phrases in Fiction

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to observe various types of phrasal and clausal postmodification of noun phrases in fiction. The theoretical part provides a description of a noun phrase with an emphasis to its syntactic functions within a sentence structure. Then, attention is paid to the main realization forms of phrasal and clausal postmodification. In the practical part, the analysis is carried out on the basis of the theory introduced in the first part of the paper. The overall distribution and qualitative features of both phrases and clauses are closely studied with the focus on the type and the syntactic function of the head noun.
