dc.description.abstract	This paper focuses on the changing roles of women in the US society, especially in the Puritan colonies of the 16th century New England, where The Scarlet Letter is set. The theoretical part deals with Puritanism and their beliefs, the roles of women in the Puritanical society that are contrasted with women in Southern and mid-Atlantic colonies; it also briefly mentions the history of the author, Nathaniel Hawthorne and his ancestors, that certainly had an impact on the novel. The second part of the paper analyzes major women characters in The Scarlet Letter and describes them on the background of Puritanical society.	eng
dc.description.abstract-translated	Tato práce se zabývá měnícím se postavením žen v americké společnosti, převážně v Puritánských koloniích 16.století - Nové Anglii, kde se kniha Šarlatové Písmeno odehrává. Teoretická část práce se věnuje Puritánům a jejich přesvědčením, postavením žen v Puritánské společnosti, které je porovnáno s postavením žen v jižní části Spojených Států Amerických a Středoatlantické oblasti a také se krátce zmiňuje o minulost autora knihy, Nathaniela Hawthorna a jeho předků, kteří na vznik knihy měli nepochybně jistý vliv. Druhá část práce analyzuje významné ženské postavy v knize Šarlatové Písmeno a popisuje je na pozadí Puritánské společnosti.	cze
