This thesis aims to explore the portrayal of gender roles and masculinity in Jane Austen's 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice. Defining terms such as gender, masculinity, and hegemonic masculinity theory creates the foundation for the practical part. The thesis focuses on 19th century British gender roles, especially the role of Mr Bennet as a father. Also, this thesis explores two hegemonic masculinities of the period and their origins and compares how
characters such as Charles Bingley, Fitzwilliam Darcy and George Wickham fit the historical notions of masculinities.
