Sustainable railway passenger transport on regional level

Abstract

The paper contains a theoretical part that analyses public transport in terms of several characteristics. The analysis includes both economic indicators and other factors and criteria that affect public transport preference from the passenger's perspective. The theoretical part is then applied to the particular case of the city of Ostrava. The aim is to outline the possibilities of increasing the number of passengers using railway transport in urban and suburban commuting. The current state of public transport is analysed as well. Alternative proposals for popularizing rail transport among traveling public are solved in order to improve the quality of travel and to facilitate other modes of transport. One of the goals is to develop a general discussion on how to better connect rail to urban transport
