dc.description.abstract-translated |
The main idea that I will pursue in this arti cle is that the beginnings of contemporary Coptic icon-painting (with its origins in the work of Isháq Fanús) and the elements in ancient Egyptian art that inspired it are an integral part of the creation of a Coptic identity on a national and ethnic basis, and at the same time part of the "revival" of the Coptic Orthodox Church. One of the basic features of the Coptic identity is demonstrating the continuity be tween the Coptic nation and the ancient Egyptians. Under the influence of the Western concept of "na tíon', the Copts see themselves as the direct (Chris tianised) heirs of the ancient Egyptian culture. This influence can be traced both on the academic Jeve! of Coptology and in politics, but has also found its place in some theological treatises. Another reason for the revival of Coptic icon-painting is the need felt by the Copts to emancipate themselves from the influence of the Western churches and to reconnect with their Orthodox roots, which had become lost under the influence ofWestern missions. |
