The Image of the "New Woman" in the Works of Mona Caird and Sarah Grand

Abstract

The aim of the bachelor thesis is to introduce the image of a phenomenon of a "New Woman" in the selected works written by two lesser known writers, Mona Caird and Sarah Grand. The "New Women" appeared as a reaction to different women movements demanding the right to vote and were perceived as an icon of dramatically changing gender norms. The theoretical part deals with the position of women in society and mainly the "New Woman" is introduced from the general point of view. The body of the paper analyses the selected works with the aim to outline "New Woman" features of the female characters portrayed in the selected books.
