Abstrakt

In the current environment characterised by dynamic development and changes, the personality of a manager, as a holder of managerial competencies that are the main source of achieving a competitive advantage, becomes increasingly important. Managerial competencies, i. e. behaviour necessary to reach the desired level of a manager’s performance, together with efficient management thus become the key factor of success. The article focuses on the identification of the process of development of a competency model and its utilization by organizations. The first part deals with theoretical approaches to competency issues. The second part identifies the process of competency model development and its utilization by organizations, specifies the individual phases of this process and proposes the methods of measurement and comparison of deviations from the aspirational levels of individual competencies. A comprehensive comparison of individual managers has been carried out by means of the TOPSIS method. The final part summarises the benefits and difficulties of applying the competency-based approach as a tool of efficient management of organizations for the purpose of achieving a competitive advantage.
