dc.description.abstract-translated |
The purpose of this article is to describe, according to the travel diary of Prosperus Anthony Berchtold,
the legation, which was sent by Charles IV to the Turkish Sultan to Istanbul. The article should, besides an
existing topic of traveling during Early Modern Times, sum up also reasons for making trips and describe means
of transport of then travelers or as in this case of imperial ambassadors. The author of this article was able to
describe this legation thanks to the list of participants which was written by Berchtold at the beginning of his
travel diary. Here, as well, a social hierarchy occurs and that is why we could compare all the positions of the
participants with the hierarchy at noble and imperial courts. The description of the journey itself completes the
picture of everyday life of then society because Berchtold mentions besides a travel itinerary also everyday
rituals, such as dinner or lunch or officiating of the holy mass. As the young noble wrote these things into his
diary, we can say that they were probably very important part of his everyday life. When he describes his travels,
he does not mention much description of any town or building. On the contrary, he describes in details all both
the official and unofficial meetings, which took place during this journey. He also mentions different strange or
even tragic events such as collision of two ships thanks to carelessness of the crew and drowning of one member
of the crew. This diary is very important source for investigation of travel diaries of 18th century because they are
very rare for this period of time and that is way, it could not have been compiled and could have not connected
this investigation with investigation of older travel diaries. |
