dc.description.abstract-translated |
A great quantity of scholarly research dealing with the mutual relations between
the spheres of religion and politics world-wide is published each year. It proves
the importance of this issue and the great interest in it. It may be acknowledged
that, in our view, a new discipline of the scientific study of religion is emerging,
and, analogously to the philosophy of religion, the psychology of religion, or the
sociology of religion, this new discipline may be called the political science of religion. In this context, the question of defining the discipline’s themes emerges.
The following themes may be considered as most important: 1) great prophets and
religious reformers and their influence on the political thinking and on the
development of society, 2) the cult of the official state deities and the patron saints
of states and towns, 3) the sacral function of the ruler and the court, 4) the political
functions of the oracle, 5) religious wars and aggressive attitudes based on religion,
6) religious and religious-political federations, 7) the question of a “chosen” nation
and its connection with nationalism, 8) political parties referring to religious
principles, 9) types of relationships between state organizations and religious
organizations, 10) other possibilities (e.g., theocratic states, sacralization of law,
accepting of new state religions based on monarchs’ decisions). |
