dc.description.abstract-translated |
This paper considers two important sources, connected with the activity of the literary brotherhoods in the East-Bohemian towns of Český Brod and Jaroměř nad Labem during the XVIth – XVIIIth centuries. These materials were first mentioned in Johann Gottfried Dlabacz´s article „Einige Nachrichten von den sogenannten Literatengesell-schaften in Böhmen“, which was printed in the tenth volume of Josef Anton Stephan Riegger´s „Materialien zur alten und neuen Statistik von Böhmen“ in 1790. The paper concerns two registers, which were in the ownership of these fraternities. Both of the books contain the basic laws, important for organizing their activities, which were based on similar principles as those of the guilds, stressing the importance of the devout way of life and the discipline among the litterati. Their main tasks include regular participation in divine services, at the hours, processions and burials and providing music for these ceremonies.
The twenty laws of the brotherhood from Český Brod are from 1593; their florid style charmingly document the later humanistic stadium of development of the old Czech language and the cultural level of the leading representatives of this community. The eleven laws of the Jaroměř litterati, from 1589, in briefer form, are published here for the first time. The two registers also include a list of the members of both brotherhoods, with interesting data on their families, recording useful demographic information on the inhabitants of both towns. |
