This thesis deals with comparison of standardised tests of English language. The introductory chapter provides an insight into the field of language testing, its interrelationship with teaching, and different types of tests and testing. The theoretical part introduces criteria against which language tests should be measured, test specifications and different approaches to language testing with emphasis laid on communicative language testing. The last two chapters of the theoretical part introduce theoretical framework of communicative competence and test techniques, two categories which will be used as the basis for the research which will be carried out in the practical part of the thesis.
