dc.description.abstract-translated |
The novel One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1962) is ‘‘a novel of its time”. The author, Ken Kesey, chose a psychiatric ward as the setting for the novel. It is an inhuman place, intended as a metaphor of American society in the 1950s and 1960s. The dominant themes of the novel are a call for individual freedom and spontaneity. The character of Randle McMurphy serves as a symbol of these values, which were typical for the emerging ‘youth’ generation in 1960s America. Symbols, themes and motifs are studied with the application of a method of textual analysis. The isolated world of the psychiatric clinic reflects the American ‘‘macrocosm”. |
