| dc.description.abstract-translated | Totalitarian ideologies are sometimes termed as political or secular religions because they use some forms deriving from religion. Since the 1970s, totalitarian regimes have been a subject of study for Religious Studies. Many scholars were involved in the analysis of totalitarian ideologies – Eric Voegelin, Raymon Aaron, Hannah Arendt and Hans Maier excelled in the field. Their works laid foundations and have influenced many other scholars up till now. This paper is focused on Eric Voegelin, an important philosopher, historian and political scientist. In his book Die Politishen Religionen published in the 1930s, he was the first to coin the term “political religions”. His analysis of Gnosticism is considered his masterpiece. He considers Fascism, Nazism, Communism, as well as Positivism or Scientism as modern forms of gnosis. Voegelin claims that the problems of modern world are connected with the tendency to regain a deity status by man and society. The desire to gain the deity status created its own symbolism with its own icons - a leader, a conception, a prophet of a new era, and a fraternity of people. The dismantling of a current social order and its replacement by a perfect one has been the aim of Gnostic movements. Every gnosis is based on so called “Koran” which provides a necessary form of camouflage. The writings of Hitler, Marx or Mao played the role of the “Koran”. In the book Die Politishen Religionen Voegelin formulates his idea of political Gnosticism. The influence of Voegelin’s ideas is still tangible today, mainly in the USA, where The Eric Voegelin Institute publishes the English edition of his work. | eng |
