Abstrakt
The main purpose of the thesis is to depict the position of women in the
Victorian society through the analysis of the novels by the Brontë sisters. The opening chapter describes the historical and cultural background and explains the rights and responsibilities of a Victorian woman. The following chapters deal with biographical information on the members of the Brontë family and literary background. The major part of the thesis includes the analysis of the position of women in the novels by the Brontë sisters. Namely it is Jane Eyre, Villette, Shirley and The Professor (Charlotte Brontë). Wuthering Heights (Emily Brontě), and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and Agnes Grey (Anne Brontë).
