dc.description.abstract-translatedThe paper presents the interdisciplinary research project which was focused on facades of the Litomyšl Castle, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The project reviews the facades from different points of view - art history, cultural history, building archeology, techniques, plaster characteristics, damage assessment and monitoring. Appropriate up-to-date documentation was provided and the existing historic data was reviewed. These led to several new findings which are present within the paper and two blocks presentation. The message about the mental world of the Castle›s builders centres around the ideals of Christian warrior and the fight against heterodox enemies, individual images were created mostly according to Dutch etchings. The contemporary appearance of the castle was largely determined by the restoration carried out in 1974-1987 according to conception described as «synthetic». Plaster technology survey determines material characteristics of main plaster types, both the renaissance and the 20th century interventions, and identifies the main factors in the degradation process. The restoration research reviews the state of conservation and levels of exposure of different parts of the sgraffito coat, with some guidelines to future protection.eng
