dc.description.abstract-translatedThe paper reflects the fact that a Catholic faction existed within the Czech Agrarian Party before the WW I. Represented by a group of Roman Catholic clergymen, it was headed by F. J. Kroiher, a priest from Southern Bohemia, who was to become a Senator of the Czechoslovak National Assembly in the interwar period. Soon after a Catholic peasants’ corporation had come into existence, the said group got involved in an argument with the press voicing the opinions of Catholic political parties in Bohemia. The media polemic between the two antagonistic groupings of the Catholic clergy resulted in a stormy exchange of views on some elementary issues, e.g., the relationship between the State and Church, ideological bearings of the society, and the existence of the political Catholicism. Priests adherent to the Agrarian Party advocated the separation of Church and State and promoted ideas of a secular civic society that would make confessionally oriented political parties unneeded. While such views were perceived as too liberal and incompatible with the official Church teaching in the Catholic milieu of the early 1900s, today - after the 2nd Vatican Council and subsequent changes of Church attitudes - they sound plausible enough (except for those concerning political parties). The study of the then controversies is intermingled with reminiscences of the life and work of F. J. Kroiher, a man who played an important role in the modern development of the Czech Church and politics.eng
