dc.description.abstract-translatedThe Marian cult was spread already in the Middle Ages, but the largest boom for Pietas Mariana arrived in the 17th and the 18th centuries when the Baroque piety appeared. Many holidays, festivities, gracious pictures and statues, learned treaties and theological disputes on individual Marian dogmas were connected with the piety to the Virgin Mary. According to the tradition, the beginnings of the Marian piety in the Czech lands went back as far as to the 9th century. The big expansion of the Marian cult could be observed in Bohemia and Moravia in the Baroque era. Mostly members of those Orders, which considered the Virgin Mary to be their founder, protector or patron, showed her great respect, mainly through lay confraternities, which were founded at the monasteries. Jesuit Marian Communities – both student, town and to a small extent also communities for rural subjects devoted to the Virgin and to St Isidor – were specific and most often way of these confraternities. The boom of these lay communities brought also so-called “Marian century” (1854-1950). Activities of Marian communities were refreshed in the last quarter of the 19th century, but the three first decades of the 20th can be considered the top period. Despite the formal similarities these modern communities differed from their Baroque forerunners in their founders (they were fashionable men and women order congregations) and in their activities, which reflected the needs of modernizing and secularizing society.eng
