The bio-based monomer, specifically acrylated methyl ester derived from sunflower oil, was incorporated to formulate polymer latexes for coating applications. The content of the bio-based monomer building units in the copolymer chain structure ranged from 5 to 30 wt. %. The emulsion polymerization of these bio-based monomers showed successful results, characterized by low coagulum levels (below 3%) and high monomer conversion rates (around 95%). The integration of the bio-based derivatives into the polymer latexes was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy. In addition, asymmetric flow fractionation coupled with multi-angle light scattering was used to analyze the molar mass distribution of the synthesized copolymers. The effectiveness of both anionic non-polymerizable and polymerizable emulsifiers was evaluated to determine the stability of the prepared latexes under elevated temperature conditions and their water resistance.eng
The graduate presented his thesis to the committee. He also responded to the comments of his opponent. He answered the questions of the committee members: What is the chemical structure of your bio-based polymer? Can you comment the link between increasing cross-linking and increasing plasticity of your samples? How did you measure the Tg and how did you estimate the error bars? Can you explain the zeta potential? Can you comment the stability of your samples? Why did you determine the stability of the samples at 40 °C? Are your samples stable from biological point of view? Can you draw the structure of some of the chemical substances that you used? What is the use of the latexes that you prepared?> Did you try the UV stability of your samples? Did the student do number of tests of properies of latexes and their films by himself?eng
