This bachelor thesis deals with the development of the protagonists of three modernist novels: James Joyce´s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Wyndham Lewis´s Tarr and David H. Lawrence´s Sons and Lovers. These novels depict the artist´s maturation. Main emphasis is laid on the stimuli which shape artist´s personality in the process of his individualization and self-realization. Also, the conflicts which arise from this mutual influence are dealt with. The work is divided into two parts. The theoretical part deals with the main features of modernism, the development of the main character´s as the agent of the plot depiction and subsequent continuation of the Künstlerroman issues. The second part is focused on the analysis of the artist and society issues, artist´s development and transformation.
