In-Yer-Face Theatre: The Crisis of Masculinity in Shopping and Fucking and Mojo

Abstract

This bachelor's thesis explores the experiential in-yer-face theatre. It focuses on the disruption of masculinity in plays Mojo by Jez Butterworth and Shopping and Fucking by Mark Ravenhill. These plays depict the social fragmentation and moral void of 1990s Britain. This era is one of the topics this thesis delves into. Drawing on the concept of archetypes, four approaches to define masculinity, three-fold model, and hegemonic order, this thesis examines how these plays portray the disruption of masculinity and how it is connected to the socio-economic context of 1990s Britain.
