Woman as a witch in selected movies

Abstract

This thesis analyses an adolescent girl as a witch in the movies The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015), directed by Robert Eggers, and Fear Street Part Three: 1666 (2021), directed by Leigh Janiak. The theoretical part focuses on the historical background of witches and early settlers in colonial America. Furthermore, it examines feminist criticism and theoretical approaches of the character and its portrayal within Anglophone popular culture. Finally, the analytical sections deal with these motifs from previous theoretical findings, with an emphasis on the characterization and gradual transformation of the two main female protagonists into witches or monstrous entities.
