Yeast vacuoles are acidic organelles containing wide range of hydrolytic enzymes, which perform degradation of macromolecules. Vacuoles also serve as a storage of amino acids or anorganic ions and play a key part in pH regulation and survival during stress. Yeasts of the genus Candida are widely distributed in nature and are common saprophytic components of the normal human microflora. However, some of the species can cause life-threating infection called candidiasis in imunocompromised patients. In order to cause the infection, Candida has to penetrate host barriers and evade the host immune defense mechanisms. Vacuoles play a significant role during survival in host immune cells and their desctruction, and thus contribute to pathogenicity of Candida species. |
